Although our three cherubs attend a very reputable private school, we're always looking for new and interesting ways to keep life and academic lessons fresh in their minds--through experiences as well as study. Therefore, during the summer months, we take time to home school our children--to in essence--give them a leg up on the year that is to follow. This year, we worked hard to master telling time (Bucket List...check) as well as gain basic addition/subtraction facts, sight word spelling and overall literacy/comprehension. The effort has paid off in spades as our kids are all great readers and attack math as if it was their job. Hmmm...maybe it will be their job one day! :)

| Interestingly, one afternoon, our study was interrupted by a tornado warning. Not common in these parts at all, so certainly something to note. It became a teachable moment about safety, as well as weather/science and the kids turned clear glasses of plain water into blue Kool Aid to see exactly how a tornado looks. |

| And not soon after, the teeth began falling out....we've had numerous visits from the Tooth Fairy this summer--as Alec and Aramis begin to give up and 'sell off' their teeth to the Tooth Fairy. Aramis lost both top front teeth within a few weeks of one another, and got a super-cool $2 bill under his pillow! |

There's nothing like Lego Math! Having manipulatives certainly helps nail home the concepts of addition/subtraction. We keep them around for homework too..since who ever tires of Legos?
Do you know who? This mom! I have the tiniest of tiny Legos all over my carpets, in my couch and even in the bed sheets (which end up in the washer--no fun!). But, if in the end, it makes the kids happy, we'll deal with it...for a while. Not forever, mind you...but a little while. :) |
